this is it.
I love hip hop analogies that actually work. So many of my interests packed into one article.

"Free Friday"
I cant begin to describe my excitement when i remembered i had a completely punched Which Wich Loyalty Card.
So today I had a free chicken salad sandwhich.
Its kinda stupid how much better a really good thing can be when its free.
anyways,
Here is another really good thing you can get for free:
Experimental Dentist School's new album Forest Field.
I once read that everything out of Portland sounds/feels/smells/tastes like damp dirt.
In a very good way, i keep finding this to be true.
In the case of Experimental Dentist School, its like a walking bare foot through a flower bed after a cool shower of melted electricity.....
Its becoming one of my favorite records this year and more importantly its free.
Just go download it.
(FYI: This blog was more so about the chicken salad.)

Oh shit its Wednesday
I was 16 (2005) and had just started my first job at Coldstone Creamery, when the near by Virgin Records announced its going out of business sale, which was music to my ears, only literally because on my breaks i got to go and grab super cheap cd's. Eventually the selection got pretty thin, and as a young hustler in the music game i resorted to buying albums based on cover art. Go figure.
The last week they were open i purchased:
M83 - Before The Dawn Heals Us
and Pheonix - Alphabetical
Two of the best purchases of my life.
I soon after bought their preceding albums, and fell in love. This is pretty much what got me through junior year, my first girlfriend, and my first break up.
Both albums continue to be two of my favorite of all time, but whats made these purchases so impacting is that both bands continued to put out good, solid records that seemed to grow with me as my own music taste matured. Not to mention both bands have risen to well deserved popularity.
Phoenix back then was not new but a only just emerging French Pop band , heavily 80's R&B and pop influenced and Dance-y as hell. They had an album in 2000 called United that had gained them some recognition in the UK before their release of Alphabetical in 2004. If you remember the apartment dance party scene in Lost in Translation, Bill Murry's Character's new friends were jamming to "Everything is Everything" of Alphabetical after karaoke. Later in the scene he comments on how good the music was.
OK, Basically what I'm getting at is Phoenix continues to hold true since our first meeting and simply fuckin rock. They realeased a hipster dance party hit album in 2006 called Its Never Been Like That, And It seems they are due for a clean follow up with their new album Wolfgang Amadeus which is scheduled to drop May 26th, with an already popular single 1901."
So yeah to all the art snobs who made me turn off Alphabetical in Drawing class in high school so you could listen to Xiu Xiu and Coco Rosie,
a big fuck you. You will be dancing to Phoenix all summer just like me.
that is all.

KEEPIN' IT REAL
Jamie Foxx is the new Obama.
(maybe im going too far but either way he's bridging gaps.)
Not only does he break into the music industry and destory Top 40 charts with t-pain-hits like "Blame it on the Alcohol," the man goes on national radio and puts Miley Cyrus on BLAST on behalf of Radiohead.
This is pure gold.
did i mention he's from texas?

CHIP Hop
clever eh?
8 bit sampling, also known as chiptuning, is the act of taking chips from vintage hardware (mostly old video game consoles as the trend goes) and putting them into synths to make music machines. And as the 80's recall continues old Nentindos and Ataris have been sampled more then ever.
I mean we've all heard 8 bit sampling before at your last Epic but oh so typical hipster dance party, with the likes of Crystal Castles, Health Disco, Sarebrepulse, Justice, Beck and the list goes on and on. Its actually became quite boring since this trend of chiptunning in dance music has been around since about 07. But the process is actually quite interesting, Antenna magazine put out a pretty good article on "Bitcrushin' It" just last winter by Matt Bean.
-I was pleased this morning to tune in to K104 and here some fine 8 bit sampling in Lil'Flips 03 release Game Over. which was quite ahead of his time.

Finale
Cant get enough? Check out an up and comming rapper Finale from Detroit who in preparation for his new album A Pipe Dream and a Promise, just dropped an 8 bit Remix to his track "One Man Show" which is actually pretty fuckin dope. Id plan on watching this guy as hes sure to blow up.
That track can be downloaded for free courtesy of XLR8R.com here:

double time
oh yeah
that shins video reminded me of this recently uploaded Local Natives vid i saw on guerilla vs bear i think? either way its quite the delightful jam if youre feeling love sick and they are covering my favorite Simon and Garfunkle song Cecilia. Worth checking out if like me, you love you some acoustic covers/random drumming/gang vocals. so fucking texas in my opinon.

Thinking about summer?

I'm being inspired by New Mexico, South Africa, and Brazil.
but more on that another time.
Speaking of New Mexico, If you havnt heard already the shins have left Sub-Pop for bigger and better things but who knows where that will be. Pretty weird actually. Anyways- i first got into the shins with the debut of their take away show quite some time ago. Gone for good remains pretty impactful to me despite their depleeting indie cred... right? -whatever, the video is pretty, and i cant stop clappin along.
